Ex-Univ. of Delaware student killed in Uganda – Yahoo! News

WILMINGTON, Del. – A former college rugby player who toured U.S. colleges and churches urging people to help children in war-riven Uganda was among 74 killed by explosions that tore through crowds watching the World Cup final in the African country.

Nate Henn was on a rugby field Sunday in Kampala with some of the children he’d gone to help when he was hit by shrapnel from one of the blasts, according to the aid group he worked for. A Uganda native Henn mentored traveled back to the country with him and was standing next to him, but 20-year-old Innocent Opwonya wasn’t harmed.

“Right now he’s so broken he can barely talk,” said Jedidiah Jenkins, spokesman for the aid group Invisible children, said of Opwonya. “Nate was just his father figure, his brother, his family.”

Henn, 25, had spent the last year traveling to campuses and churches to raise money and seek volunteers for work in Uganda. Henn raised thousands of dollars for children’s education and went to the country to meet the children, the aid group said.

The children called Nate Henn “Oteka,” or the strong one, and they “fell in love with Nate’s wit, strength, character and steadfast friendship,” San Diego-based group that helps child soldiers said on its website.

Henn’s former youth pastor, the Rev. Andrew Hudson, said Henn was a gentle, sincere young man with deep compassion for those in distress.

The pastor from Chelten Baptist Church in Dresher, Pa., said Henn knew that traveling in Africa could be dangerous. “Nate was willing to take that risk in order to provide hope and healing for precious children who were finding themselves in very difficult situations,” Hudson said.

Henn’s parents, who live in Raleigh, N.C., declined to comment. Early Monday, a truck delivered flowers to their two-story brick home.

His sister Brynne Henn wrote on her Facebook page: “I just don’t understand. Please pray.”

Henn was a psychology major at the University of Delaware from September 2003 to December 2008 but did not earn a degree, spokeswoman Meredith Chapman said. He graduated from Concord High School.

He played club rugby at the university in 2005-06 until an injury sidelined him, according to school officials and a teammate, Jason Vanterpool.

He was “always smiling, he was a really, really nice guy,” Vanterpool said.

Former neighbor Melanie Mask recalled how Henn and other children would play football in the front yard of her home in the quiet, shady neighborhood in suburban Wilmington where he grew up. As a teenager in Wilmington, Henn volunteered at an orphanage and went on a church mission to Peru.

“He always wanted to help people; never met a stranger, ever,” she said.

Mask described Henn as gregarious but sensitive, easily making friends in high school. She said girls vied to be his prom date and nicknamed him, “Nate the date.”

Dozens of people were wounded in the attack, including at least three Americans from a Pennsylvania church group.

___

Associated Press writers David Dishneau in Hagerstown, Md., Karen Mahabir in Washington, Mike Baker in Raleigh, N.C., and Elliot Spagat in San Diego contributed to this report.

Nlp And Hypnosis

According to the book titled “Hypnosis for Change”, authored by Josie Hadley and Carol Staudacher: Ӆ.What is Hypnosis? Hypnosis has long been associated with the strange and mysterious, with side shows and faith healers; yet hypnosis isn’t mysterious or supernatural and we have all been in a hypnotic state literally thousands of times. You didn’t notice because it is such a natural state of mind. And the hypnotic state is natural for all humans and many animalsŔ

In definition, Hypnosis is a communication between conscious mind and the sub-conscious mind in trance state, or a sleep-like state. What can hypnosis do for you? Other than provide a fascinating new experience. The answer is that hypnosis can be used to improve your general functioning, to make you feel better mentally or physically.

Hypnosis is the bridge connects the conscious mind and the sub conscious mind. Before we go into how we can achieve the desire change by using hypnosis, we need to understand then level of the consciousness.

1st level – Alert: This is the normal intellectual functioning level; our mind is set to normal reflex & motor respond

2nd level – Light Trance: In this state, our body is in relaxation condition, breathing & pulse will become slow, and our attention will be focus in imagination activity.

3rd level – Moderate Trance: you are losing awareness of surrounding, but increasing awareness of internal function, such as: breathing, heart beat and so on.

4th level – Deep Trance: there is further reduction of activity and energy output in this state; normally you will fell limpness or stiffness of limb. The attention will be barrowed and increased suggestibility.

5th level Sleep – all the voluntary exercise is suspended in this level, severe reduction of absence of conscious though.

The 2nd to 4th level are the ones in which the change of behavior will occur and the one we can suggest any changes that we want. This is because when you are in light trance or deep trance state, your body and mind will experiencing a totally relaxation and sleeping feeling, it will reduce the activity of consciousness by which this is the filter of all possibility and suggestion. When the consciousness level goes down, it will increase the activity of sub-conscious mind, meaning to say the more creative of your mind to create th

Hypnosis — What is it? What can we use it for? And can you be hypnotised?

Sally sat down in the chair. She looked at me and paused. “I don’t think you’ll be able to hypnotise me,” she said.

“What makes you think that?” I asked.

“I’ve been to a hypnotist, and he couldn’t hypnotise me. Another time, I went to a stage show, and the hypnotist just couldn’t get me to do the stuff. I went to a hypnotherapist after that, and nothing happened. So I don’t think you can hypnotise me.”

I’ve heard endless variations of “I can’t be hypnotised,” with reasons ranging from Sally’s story to, “I just don’t think you can”.

What is hypnosis?

The thing is, when we ask, “What is hypnosis?” we get many different answers, depending on whom you ask.

Hypnosis is everything

The loosest definition is NLP’s “Everything is hypnosis.” NLP says that hypnosis is simply a different state — and whenever you change your mental state, it would mean you’re in some type of hypnosis!

Whilst this definition is useful and practical for NLP-type work, it certainly doesn’t answer what most of us think of as hypnosis.

Hypnosis is obedience

Thanks to the movies, many people think that when you go into hypnosis, you obey the hypnotist without question and against your will; and when you come out of hypnosis, you forget what was happening.

Like most Hollywood themes, this is nonsense. It does sometimes happen that a person has spontaneous amnesia (in other words, he forgets what happened while in hypnosis), but it’s rare.

It’s also possible for a hypnotist to deliberately cause amnesia, but that generally needs a lot of trust. Some wicked person saying, “And then you will shoot the man opposite you”

would not generate much trust, would it?

Hypnosis is a trance

If we think of hypnosis as a sleepy trance-like state, this covers most types of modern hypnosis therapy. However, a person under hypnosis can wake up and still be in hypnosis. You’ve seen this in stage hypnosis shows.

In fact, hypnosis is generally a more alert state, where you are more aware of what’s going on.

The science

Researchers have measured what happens in the brain when under hypnosis. Although they don’t understand hypnosis yet, they have spotted a number of important things going on. One interesting thing is that, under hypnosis, the left brain (which we usually think of as the “logical” side) becomes less active, and the right brain (the “creative” side) more active.

Under hypnosis, we can access our more creative and imaginative parts, and make great and lasting changes. In fact, I teach self-hypnosis to all my clients so that they can continue to improve after

we’ve finished our sessions together.

A number of other things happen in the brain, but I won’t go into them here.

What can we use hypnosis for?

Hypnosis lets you to change your state of mind, either temporarily or permanently. So, hypnosis is useful whenever you need to change your state of mind. Here are just a few examples:

Entertainment — you’ve seen stage hypnosis, and it can be tremendous fun. Another favourite is to go out and get drunk on water. At closing time, you can safely sober up in seconds and drive home without hangovers, without destroying your liver and without wasting all that money!

Therapy — when a therapist uses hypnosis to speed up or improve therapeutic change

Education — good teachers will hypnotise their pupils (using the NLP definition of hypnosis) to speed up learning and make it more enjoyable

Rapid change — when a hypnotist uses hypnosis to effect fast changes to mental states; such as removing phobias, getting someone off alcohol, increasing confidence, and so many more

Sports performance — to improve game-playing skills. Expert golfers, for example, use a form of self-hypnosis when they take each shot

Can you be hypnotised?

I lifted Sally’s arm. I let go and it stayed there. “Are you keeping it there deliberately?” I asked.

“No,” Sally said, looking at her arm as if it were a strange object.

“OK,” I said. “Imagine that your arm is a stiff rod that can’t bend. No matter how hard you try, you just can’t bend it. Can you imagine that?”

“Yes,” said Sally.

“Right, then, try to bend it.” Sally’s arm stayed straight. “Try harder,” I said. “I can’t see it bending.” It still stayed straight.

“I can’t,” Sally laughed.

“The funny thing is, Sally, when I tap the arm, you can feel control coming right back to you and you can bend it, now.” I tapped her arm. Sally bent it, relaxed it into her lap and looked at me.

Anyone can be hypnotised… It requires is trust; so, if you’re not happy with the hypnotist, it won’t happen. It needs you to be willing to go along with the hypnotist; that’s because it’s your unconscious that does the work, and your unconscious wants your permission to go ahead.

Sometimes, a person can’t be hypnotised, because they’re scared of losing control. I used to be like that. During my first training, I became frustrated at not being able to enjoy the experience (hypnosis is very, very pleasant), and I made a point of allowing myself to lose the control. I’m really glad I did, because the hypnotist used the opportunity to fix a big sleeping problem I had been having for years!

If you’re scared of losing control, you can ask your hypnotist to hypnotise you in a way that you keep full control.

Actually, you always stay in control: Experiments have shown that a hypnotist can’t make you do anything that you find ethically distasteful. You could believe that you’re naked on stage in front of an audience, but if the hypnotist told you to actually take off your clothes, you’d come straight out of hypnosis (unless you’re a natural exhibitionist!).

In short, hypnosis is completely safe under trained hands.

It used to be that I would only have to line my shoes up perfectly prior to watching a movie. I don’t know where this habit came from, but it’s annoying. The problem is that I can’t watch a movie without lining up my shoes. My wife tells me to try it, which I have, but it leads to lack of enjoyment, which defeats the purpose of watching a movie. She claims that I have a lot messed up in my life, so I need everything to be perfect when I enter a fantasy world (movie). But, she’s not a psychologist. If anyone is going to psychoanalyze and prescribe themselves with an action or medication, it it’s going to be me. Stubborn, I know, but I can’t afford a real psychologist on a consistent basis. Who can?

Since we have had a fire pit outside for several years, I figured I’d take full advantage of it. It’s not that we haven’t taken advantage of it in the past. We have had many great nights of sitting back with a glass of wine and talking about memorable moments in our lives. But as time has gone on and stresses have increased, we have used the fire pit less and less. Sad, but true. And probably true for many other people as well.

Having recently read about NLP hypnosis, I figured I’d give it a shot. I’m definitely on the skeptical side, but when there’s potential to solve a problem without having to pay a doctor, I’m all over it. And, by the way, this goes well beyond lining up shoes. When I exit the car, I have to check every door to make sure they’re locked, even though I already know they’re locked. And at night, I have to turn the fan on in the bathroom while I let the faucet run for three seconds before putting my hands underneath the water. I then have to dry the front and back of my hands on a hand towel without picking up the towel. These might sound silly, but Howard Hughes had similar silly problems at a young age. As he got older, his problems worsened. Many people feel it had a lot to do with his death.

In attempt to cure my OCD on my own, I have been sitting out at the fire pit by myself while using NLP hypnosis. I focus on connecting my subconscious with reality. I have tried this with a lit fire pit and an unlit fire pit. I think I have made a little progress, but it’s tough to tell. It’s not like taking a test and getting actual results. I have cured the shoe issue by moving them into another room an hour prior to watching a movie. I just don’t know if this could have been done the whole time or if this is a result of sitting out at the fire pit while using NLP hypnosis. I guess it should be looked at as progress. It’s certainly not regression.

I’m hoping for an OCD-less future. I’m hoping for an OCD-less future. I had to write that twice (part of the problem).

I recently found someone’s list of the top ten mental mistakes golfers make and how to correct them instantly. As I disagree with much of the “how to correct them instantly” advice, I’ve included his first 10 mental mistakes below with my suggestions as to how address them with NLP and Golf Hypnosis.

Number 1: Letting your internal dialogue run wild

Get a good hypnotist to install a post-hypnotic suggestion that you go into a trance as you step into each shot or use self-hypnosis to achieve the same result. Whichever way, you’re allowing your unconscious mind to get on with playing the shot to the best of your technical ability while keeping your chattering conscious mind out of the action. That seems to work for Tiger Woods.

Number 2: Tightening up on your difficult shots

Learn to use hypnosis or an NLP anchoring technique to relax before planning any shot. Then control the inevitable internal dialogue with a post-hypnotic suggestion, as in number 1 above.

Number 3: Worrying about the Yips

This is basically a mental tightening up on a specific difficult shot, so I‘d handle it the same as Number 2.

Number 4: Telling yourself what NOT to do

Don’t go in the bunker, trees, water, etc! Your unconscious mind doesn’t know how to not do something. If I ask you to think of a blue elephant, you unconsciously have to imagine one – you probably just did! If you want to give yourself or anyone else a suggestion, phrase it using positive progressive language. That’s what a good hypnotist will help you with.

Number 5: Dwell on your mistakes and bad shots

The key thing is to learn from your mistakes, bad luck and plain bad shots before releasing them to the past where they can trouble you no more. Once again, you can make sure you do this with the help of post-hypnotic suggestions from a good hypnotist or use self-hypnosis. You may recall from my earlier post about how Tiger handles this despite, or maybe with the help of, his temper tantrums when he has a bad or unlucky shot. Once you release a bad shot like this, you’re free to hit the next one to the best of your ability and as if you had never hit the bad one.

Number 6: ”Trying” to consciously control your swing mechanics

Do you remember how hard it was to tie your shoe laces the first time and how it’s just an automatic process? To see what I mean, write down the step by step instructions for how you tie your shoelaces and then give them to someone else and ask them to follow them to the letter. Even if they succeed, it’ll take them much longer than just using the unconscious program. Now imagine consciously following those instructions in the time it takes to swing a golf club.

The only effective way to swing a golf club is to switch off your conscious mind and all its thoughts about swing mechanics and trust your unconscious mind – you’ve already programmed it to repeat the best shot you’ve ever hit. And the way to make sure you do that is, as before, to get a good hypnotist to install an appropriate post-hypnotic or use self-hypnosis.

Number 7: Criticising your shot and looking for flaws in your swing

Even using hypnosis, you’ll occasionally mishit a shot or be unlucky. However, that’s no cause for criticism and certainly no reason for changing your swing mechanics out on the course. Just learn from the shot and move on as described in my response to the dwelling on your mistakes and bad shots.

Number 8: Comparing yourself to some other golfer

You can learn a lot in golf from watching a good player at his or her best, but the real challenge of golf is you playing against the course. It really doesn’t matter how well or badly your playing partners or opponents are playing. If you play to the best of your ability and lose, then well done you and well done them. That’s one of the many special things I love about golf.

If it still bothers you then install the post-hypnotic suggestion that you’ll treat every shot as if it’s the last one you’ll ever play There’d be no reason to dwell on your past shots and there wouldn’t be any in the future, so you might as well make the most of the one you’re playing now.

Number 9: Thinking about what could go wrong

In your mind this is interpreted in a similar way to telling yourself what NOT to do. Your unconscious mind will have to think about the thing that could go wrong happening and it will do your best to make it happen. If you want to evaluate what could go wrong, that’s fine, before you make up your mind what you do want to happen. Then you can use your post-hypnotic suggestion or self-hypnosis to switch off your unconscious mind and let your unconscious programming get on with hitting your desired shot.

Number 10: Worrying about other people watching you

If you’re using hypnosis and NLP to manage your state and concentration during the round, you will be consciously unaware and untroubled by the actions of others. Even if they are thinking bad or critical thoughts about you, those thoughts are in their heads and not yours. Once you go into your playing trance you will be blissfully unaware of your conscious self-talk.

So what are my overall conclusions?

Now, it won’t surprise you to hear that my suggestions all revolve around the use of a good hypnotist helping you with appropriate post-hypnotic suggestions tied to a number of carefully chosen golf psychology techniques. Without the hypnosis and post-hypnotic suggestions, you will probably forget to remember to execute the techniques on every shot.

You’ll also notice I’m avoiding naming the “someone” who published the original list and hidden his responses. I know that if you really want to read them, you can probably find them on the web, but I don’t want them on my website.

One of the reasons that I failed to benefit from the Inner Game of Golf and the many other books, DVDs and CDs I purchased over my earlier the years is that none of them installed any way of remembering not to forget to do their techniques when I needed them. The nearest anyone has ever got to achieving that has been Dr Karl Morris with his Circle Game, but that worked very intermittently for me.

It would be an improvement if I had a caddy every time I played and the caddy had a checklist of all the golf psychology instructions I had to remember. Even then, I would still need something like hypnosis to manage the interference from my conscious mind while I hit the shots.

Using Hypnosis And Nlp To Break The Habit Of Nail Biting

Nail biting is related to skin picking and hair pulling. These behaviors are labeled as Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders. Nail biters keep their hands behind their backs or in their pockets. Nail biters often feel social embarrassment and experience out-of-control feelings at times. At times they may wonder why they are not able to stop biting and they often question whether or not they are sane.

Biting often happens when people are in one of two modes. Some nail biters do it in an automatic way, as if they are in some kind of altered state and not really thinking about what they are doing. It’s often when they are engrossed in some other activity at the same time such as talking on the phone or watching TV, etc. For others, their main activity at the time is the actual picking or biting, and they will usually interrupt their other activities to engage in it.

There is a strong commonality seen in the various purposes behind nail biting, skin picking and hair pulling. At a very basic level, these symptoms satisfy an urge. Many report an uncontrollable compulsion to do them. Pulling, picking or biting also seems to deliver a pleasurable or relaxed sensation.

When sufferers feel stressed, doing these things has a kind of soothing effect on their nervous systems and reduces levels of stimulation. On the other hand, when they are bored or inactive, they seem to provide a needed level of stimulation to the nervous system. This may account for why so many people who dislike doing them find it so hard to give up these behaviors. It simply “feels good” at the time no matter what.

Even if you have more than one of these problems, do not give up on yourself. These symptoms can be overcome if you have the motivation. More important is learning to “de-stigmatize” yourself. You are not crazy, helpless, morally weak or totally out of control, even though you may feel like you are at times. Once you realize that you are just a person who simply happens to have a bad habit, you can make some serious progress.

Skin picking and nail biting are chronic problems, so there is not currently a “cure” but you can find a recovery if you are willing to work at it. Hypnosis for nail biting consists of three parts.
1000

Therapy For Nail Biting

First off, nail biting is a nervous habit. So the first part of the therapy is to teach the nail biter how to be more relaxed at all times. To that end, I have found that traditional hypnosis, Ericksonian hypnosis, and NLP techniques are usually quite effective. That’s because the very essence of hypnosis is relaxation. The biter can learn to apply several different methods to increase both the relaxed state, as well as his/her overall feeling of relaxation and well-being.

The second part teaches the biter awareness of this unconscious habit. Suggestions are given to the unconscious mind to make the consciousness aware that you are about to bite your nails. Then you get to consciously decide whether or not you are actually going to bite them.

There are also several other powerful hypnosis and NLP techniques. As an example, we can help the client to set up an “Anchor” or trigger so that he/she can momentarily mentally step outside of him/herself. This is an effective method that will effectively relieve the compulsion.

The third part of the hypnotherapy is to eliminate the compulsion to bite. There are hypnotic techniques that actually program the client with a compulsion to not bite.

With this particular behavior, being realistic is very important. First, you have practiced the unwanted behavior hundreds or even thousands of times. It is important to accept that the urge to bite your nails will not be overcome in a few days.

Second, you are fighting the fact that biting your nails feels good, and it offers a lot of short-term satisfaction and either stimulation or soothing feelings. It can take time to overcome, but it will be worth it. My experience has shown a number of techniques to be very effective!
